The Great Wave off Kanagawa is the famous picture of the rolling waves by the late Japanese artist Hokusai. A hairdresser I used to go to years ago had a half sleeve tattoo of this particular image.
Hand stitched from 3/4" wide soft turquoise triple starbright millinery straw braid, then blocked using traditional millinery techniques involving steam and wooden hat blocks to create a small shallow crown and wide brim, the back has been swept up into a deep rolling ocean wave whilst the front has small soft ripples to invoke thoughts of how softly the huge wave ends up lapping at the shore.
The tip of the wave has been embellished with hundreds of tiny frosted & pearlised Miyuki teardrop shaped beads to recreate the foaming froth.
Worn tilted towards the front of the head in a jaunty manner.
Measures approx: 17" (43cm) wide and stands approx 10" (25.5cm) high.
Held in place with a black metal hairband.
